We do everything we can to make sure our coffee trees are happy and healthy but enough can't be said about the importance of the where our trees are planted. All Downes Grounds coffee is grown on our farm, which is located in the famous Kona Coffee Belt on the Big Island of Hawaii. All coffee called "Kona Coffee" must be grown in an area that is only three miles wide and twenty miles long. Here, only in this very specific location, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, on the side of an active volcano, are the perfect coffee growing conditions found. Here in Kona, the soil is rich and dark, packed with nutrients and microorganisms that have been brought from the Earth's core to the Earth's surface only a few hundred years ago. The relative youth of the Big Island on the Geologic Timescale allows for extremely nutritious soil found in Kona as nutrients have not broken down or been used yet. Climate is another very important contributing factor to Kona's amazing coffee. The warm, sunny days and cool crisp nights, year round, provide the ultimate growing weather for coffee trees. We have a distinct wet and dry season here in Kona but we do not experience much temperature variation throughout the year. Days average in the low 80's to high 70's and nights average in the mid to low 60's, Fahrenheit.
